Angel Locsin in Forbes Asia's list of 2019 Heroes of Philanthropy

MANILA, Philippines – Actress Angel Locsin has been included in Forbes Asia's list of most generous philanthropists.

Locsin may well be a "real-life Darna" as she was named part of Forbes Asia’s “2019 Heroes of Philanthropy: Catalysts For Change." The list recognizes individuals who have made huge efforts, contributions and donations that impact countries or territories in Asia Pacific. The list of unranked as everyone included is "considered equally honored."

After earthquakes hit Mindanao, Angel Locsin donated 1 million pesos ($19,000) and distributed truckloads of relief supplies to affected residents. 

“The focus is on individuals who provide the capital and are personally committed to achieving a long-term vision. As always, we have focused on new names, unless there was a significant development in a previous honoree’s philanthropy that justified relisting them,” said Forbes.

The 34-year-old Locsin's charitable causes and efforts have been noted, including the most recent one where she personally distributed relief goods to earthquake victims in Mindanao. She also made a donation of P1 million.

"Locsin, whose mother was adopted by a family from the island, has long helped the region, which has been riven by sectarian strife for decades," Forbes wrote.

The actress' efforts during the 2017 Marawi Siege were also recognized. They wrote, "During the 2017 battle between the Philippine army and Islamist rebels in Marawi, she joined the Rural Missionaries of the Philippines, donating and distributing food packets and school supplies to tens of thousands of displaced victims."

Locsin was quoted by Forbes saying, "These are urgent times when we have to act as fast as we can to save lives and rebuild communities, and we don’t even have to think why."

Aside from her contribution to Mindanao, Locsin is also known to have greatly helped in relief efforts for the victims of natural disasters in the country. He donated and helped when Tropical Storm Ondoy hit in 2009, Typhoon Habagat in 2012 and Typhoon Haiyan in 2013.

Forbes estimated that Locsin has contributed around P15 million over the past decade in various programs that help those in need. From education scholarships, to the political rights of indigenous people and even giving a voice to victims of violence against women and children, Locsin helped like a "real superhero."

Forbes quoted Locsin who wrote in 2017, “You don’t need to wear a costume to be a superhero.”

Joining Locsin on the list is SM Prime Holdings Inc. director Hans Sy who bought a property to expand a center that provided temporary shelter for homeless families.
