Former GMA reporter Steve Dailisan pursues love of flying, now a pilot

MANILA, Philippines – On February 25, 2018, Kapuso broadcaster Steve Dailisan officially signed off from GMA’s 24 Oras so he could fully pursue his dream of flying. Just months later, the young man posted an update to his status as he now enjoys his new career as pilot.

When Steve announced that he would be leaving broadcast journalism to pursue his love of flying, a lot of people were surprised. He had a solid career of 12 years and the fact that he had a stable job with GMA Network, why would he even leave it?

Steve admitted that being a pilot had never been his childhood dream.

“Sa totoo lang, suntok sa buwan ang pangaraping makapagpalipad ng eroplano. It has never been my childhood dream. How can you dream of something that is way beyond your reach? I'm just being realistic. Alam ko kasi na sintayog ng lipad ng eroplano ang presyo. The training cost in aviation remains astronomical in value. My family already struggled sending me to College how much more in a flight school?” the aspiring pilot shared in a Facebook post.

But after he realized that he wanted to be a pilot and got the support of friends in the Department of Transportation (DOTr), particularly Secretary Arthur Tugade and Dir. Goddess Hope Libiran, Steve had the courage to quit his job and pursue this dream.

The aspiring pilot admitted that it was difficult to turn away from his ‘first love’, especially when he was later faced with the difficulties of learning this new career but he “closed his eyes and took the biggest leap of faith” he could ever imagine.

In the Facebook post, he recalled the difficulties of ground school and the subsequent challenges he experienced when it came to actual flying. But he managed to make it through.

On Monday, October 8, the aspiring pilot aced the biggest milestone he’s ever had so far in this new career path he’s taken: his first solo flight!

“On the 8th of October, 2018 I was released to conquer the skies. I can't help but feel emotional as Capt. Shiel Von Dy radios the tower activating the flight plan intended for my 1st solo flight. My heart throbs as I was taxiing to enter the active runway,” Steve narrated.

“Indeed, there's that unexplainable feeling. Magkahalong kaba, takot at excitement. Di matutumbasan ang takot sa daming beses na nalagay sa bingit ng alanganin ang buhay ko noong reporter pa.”
