Super typhoon Lawin PAGASA weather update October 19, 2016

MANILA, Philippines - 'Bagyong Lawin' (international name Haima) has accelerated, intensified further and now threatens Northern Luzon, state weather bureau PAGASA announced in its 5:00 a.m. update on Wednesday, October 19.

At 4:00 a.m. today, the eye of Typhoon Lawin was located based on all available data at 535 km East of Casiguran, Aurora(16.1°N, 127.1°E). It has maximum sustained winds of up to 205 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 240 kph. It is forecast to move West Northwest at 26 kph.

Tropical cyclone warning signal (TCWS) No. 2 is raised over 13 areas of Luzon: Cagayan including Calayan Group of Islands, Isabela, Northern Aurora, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Apayao, Abra, Kalinga, Mt. Province, Ifugao, Benguet, Nueva Vizcaya and Qurino.

Signal No. 1 is up in these areas: Batanes group of Islands,La Union, Tarlac, Pangasinan, Nueva Ecija, Rest of Aurora, Zambales, Pampanga, Bulacan, Northern Quezon including Polillo Islands, Bataan, Rizal, Laguna, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes and Metro Manila.

PAGASA said that Typhoon Lawin is expected to intensify further before making landfall over Cagayan Area by tomorrow early morning (October 20) then will cross Apayao and Ilocos Norte.

'Lawin' is possible to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Friday early morning(October 21) or tomorrow evening.

JMA, JTWC: Lawin is a super typhoon

In a report from Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the Regional Specialized Meteorological Center in Asia and Northwestern Pacific, on Tuesday, it classified Lawin as a super typhoon (highest intensity classification.)

The U.S. Naval Observatory's Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) on Tuesday night also classified Lawin as a violent typhoon, with an intensity similar to Category 5 hurricanes in the North Atlantic and Northeast Pacific.

The JTWC which has a shorter measurements than PAGASA said that Lawin will reach peak intensity Wednesday before landfall with sustained winds estimated to reach 269 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 324 kph.

This powerful typhoon could cause major structural damage, including completely removing exterior walls and roofs.
