MANILA, Philippines - Due to inclement weather brought by super typhoon Lawin (international name: Haima), some local government units (LGUs) announced class suspensions for Thursday, October 20, 2016.

State weather bureau PAGASA announced on Wednesday afternoon that Typhoon Lawin already reached winds of up to 225 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 315 kph. Tropical cyclone warning signal (TCWS) No. 5 was raised over the areas of Cagayan, Isabela, Kalinga, Apayao, Northern Abra and Ilocos Norte.

Signal No. 4 up in Rest of Abra, Ilocos Sur, Mt. Province, Ifugao and Calayan Group of Islands.

Signal No. 3 hoisted in La Union, Benguet, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino and Northern Aurora.

Signal No. 2 up for the following areas: Batanes Group of Islands, Pangasinan, Rest of of Aurora, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Northern Zambales, and Northern Quezon including Polillo Islands.

And, Signal No. 1 for Rest of Zambales, Bulacan, Bataan, Pampanga, Rizal, Rest of Quezon, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay and Metro Manila.

Based on the automatic class suspension guidelines from the Department of Education (DepEd):
  • Signal No. 1: Cancellation or suspension of classes at kindergarten in the affected area
  • Signal No. 2: Cancellation or suspension of classes at the kindergarten, elementary, and secondary level in the affected area
  • Signal No. 3 or higher: Cancellation or suspension of classes at the kindergarten, elementary, and secondary and tertiary levels, including graduate schools in the affected area
