MANILA, Philippines – The deaths of Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) basketball players Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili have shocked the sports community and left many searching for answers.

What really happened in Aurora? Two Ateneo players drowned during team-building activity

The tragedy happened on June 8 during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora involving members of the Ateneo Blue Eagles men's basketball program.

In the hours that followed, social media was flooded with rumors and speculation.

Some claimed the players were wearing ankle weights.

Others suggested the incident was linked to initiation rites.

There were even false reports involving other players and claims of a tsunami.

However, authorities have urged the public to rely only on verified information.

According to the Philippine National Police Regional Office 3 (PRO 3), the investigation remains ongoing.

Based on initial findings, Baterbonia and Adili were swimming when they were reportedly carried by a strong current into deeper waters.

"Initial findings indicate that the victims were swimming when they were reportedly carried by a strong current into deeper waters," PRO 3 said in a statement.

Police said personnel from the Dipaculao Municipal Police Station immediately responded after receiving reports of the incident and coordinated with concerned agencies during rescue operations.

"The victims were promptly transported to a medical facility; however, they were later declared dead by the attending physician," the police regional office said.

The police stressed that investigators are still gathering facts and have yet to release their final findings.

"We respectfully ask the public to refrain from speculation and allow the authorities to complete the investigation," PRO 3 said.

The agency also urged beachgoers and tourists to observe safety advisories and exercise caution during water activities, particularly in areas where strong currents may be present.

What is known is that Ateneo's basketball program has a long history of holding intensive team-building camps in Aurora.

Former players have previously described physically demanding activities that included beach workouts and swimming exercises.

In a 2017 interview, members of the Blue Eagles recalled a similar training camp in Baler, Aurora and described it as one of the toughest experiences of their lives.

Players said the activities helped build resilience, discipline, trust, and teamwork.

The camp later became part of the team's championship story that season.

Because of that history, some observers believe the latest incident may have been a tragic accident rather than an intentional act of negligence.

Still, the tragedy has raised serious questions about athlete safety during off-campus activities.

The incident has also renewed discussions about accountability.

Under CHED Memorandum Order No. 63, s. 2017, higher education institutions conducting local off-campus activities are required to adopt measures that protect the safety and welfare of participants and to exercise due diligence before, during, and after the activity.

As a result, investigators are expected to examine whether all necessary safety protocols, risk assessments, supervision measures, and emergency response procedures were properly observed during the Aurora team-building activity.

Whether those requirements were fully complied with remains part of the ongoing investigation.

If lapses are found, the university and personnel responsible for organizing or supervising the activity could face accountability under applicable laws and regulations.

However, no government agency has released findings pointing to negligence or identifying any individual as responsible for the tragedy.

For now, Ateneo, the families of Baterbonia and Adili, and the wider basketball community continue to mourn two young lives lost in a heartbreaking incident.

Extending its condolences to those affected, PRO 3 said, "During this difficult time, PRO 3 stands in solidarity with the bereaved families and all those affected by this tragedy."

As the search for answers continues, authorities are urging the public to let the facts—not rumors—guide the conversation.
