The university said the tragedy occurred on the afternoon of June 8, 2026, and extended its deepest condolences to the families, friends, teammates, coaches, and loved ones of the two student-athletes.
“The entire Ateneo community mourns the loss of Rene and Divine,” Ateneo said in a statement.
Adili, 21, played for the Blue Eagles in UAAP Season 88 and averaged 8.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in 11 games.
The Nigerian forward was regarded as one of Ateneo’s key contributors as the team looked toward future UAAP campaigns.
Baterbonia, 19, was a highly touted recruit who was expected to make his debut for Ateneo in UAAP Season 89 later this year.
A product of Ateneo de Davao and Talacogon National High School, he led the Davao Region to the boys’ basketball gold medal in the 2025 Palarong Pambansa in Ilocos Norte and earned Most Valuable Player honors.
He also helped Davao Region reach the championship game of the 2026 Palarong Pambansa in Agusan del Sur before they fell to Calabarzon in the finals.
The tragic incident came less than a week after Baterbonia moved to the Ateneo campus in Quezon City.
Messages of grief and support poured in from across the basketball community following the announcement of the players’ deaths.
The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) extended its condolences and said it is coordinating with Ateneo officials to determine what assistance may be needed.
Meanwhile, Talacogon National High School described Baterbonia as a dedicated student, fierce competitor, and inspiration who brought immense pride to his hometown through his achievements on the national stage.
Ateneo said it is providing support to the families of Adili and Baterbonia, as well as to teammates and members of the university community affected by the tragedy.
The university also requested privacy for those grieving as funeral arrangements are being finalized in consultation with the families.
