'Kiyapo' becomes typhoon after exiting PAR; Signal No. 1 still up in 5 areas

MANILA, Philippines — Bagyong Kiyapo rapidly intensified into a typhoon after exiting the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), while Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1 remains in effect over parts of Northern Luzon, PAGASA said.

In its 5:00 a.m. tropical cyclone bulletin on Saturday, July 25, PAGASA said the center of Typhoon Kiyapo (international name Noul) was estimated at 320 kilometers west of Basco, Batanes, as of 4:00 a.m.

The typhoon packs maximum sustained winds of 120 km/h, gusts of up to 150 km/h, and is moving west northwestward at 25 km/h.

PAGASA said strong to typhoon-force winds extend up to 470 kilometers from the center of the cyclone.

• Batanes
• western Babuyan Islands (Calayan Island, Dalupiri Island, Fuga Island)
• northwestern mainland Cagayan (Pamplona, Sanchez-Mira, Claveria, Santa Praxedes)
• northern Apayao (Luna, Calanasan)
• Ilocos Norte

PAGASA warned that minimal to minor impacts from strong winds remain possible in areas under TCWS No. 1.

The weather bureau also reminded the public that heavy rainfall and severe winds may still be experienced in areas outside the forecast landfall point and the forecast confidence cone.

Kiyapo is forecast to continue moving generally northwestward until Sunday, July 26, toward southern mainland China before turning north-northwestward.

PAGASA said favorable environmental conditions will allow the typhoon to continue strengthening over the next 12 hours before making landfall over southern mainland China.

The cyclone is expected to weaken rapidly after moving farther inland due to increased land interaction.

Although Kiyapo is now outside PAR, PAGASA advised residents in Northern Luzon to continue monitoring official weather bulletins and remain alert for any weather-related hazards associated with the typhoon.
