Two dead after man sets female bus conductor on fire

MANILA, Philippines – On Sunday, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) confirmed that two people died in a bus fire incident in Fairview, Quezon City. Videos taken from the scene showed passengers scrambling for safety, pushing each other through the door or climbing out the windows of the bus.

In one video, the bus could be seen fully engulfed in the raging fire. The green bus was reduced to a blackened metal shell after the hour-long fire. Though no other vehicles were affected, the remains of two people were found inside the bus, burned beyond recognition.

Senior Fire Officer I Robin Topacio revealed that the cause of the fire was a still unidentified man who was seen by witnesses to have been engaged in a scuffle with the bus’s female conductor, Amelene Sembana.

According to eyewitnesses, the guy was seated at the front but loudly fighting with Sembana for what appears to be personal matters. Some of the witnesses believe the two know each other but the exact cause of their fight remained unclear.

The two were soon hitting each other when the man suddenly took out a bottle and doused the conductor before setting her on fire. The woman tried to run out of the bus but the shocked passengers overtook her in going outside, stepping on her body in a stampede.

It is believed that the plastic barriers in the bus helped spread the fire quickly to the back as terrified passengers screamed in fear, breaking the bus windows to get out.

But the man was not intent on harming the others as he did not pour gasoline on anyone else, though another body was later found inside the bus. It is believed that this could be the body of the guy who set the female conductor on fire, creating a chain reaction that burned the bus down. However, the authorities are still trying to identify the charred remains.
