MANILA, Philippines - The Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino (BMP), a socialist labor group, denounced the Supreme Court’s decision to go along with President Rodrigo Duterte’s plan to bury the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani as an “endorsement of dictatorship.”

“Ferdinand Marcos is no hero: He was responsible for killing and for torturing thousands of people—including many workers. He looted the public treasury. And he created the conditions that made the lives of millions of Filipinos miserable,” the group said.

“All previous regimes, and all those whose interests they protected, deserve the blame for driving so many people to think that dictatorship is a good thing and Marcos was a good man,” the group stressed.

“But let us not forget for a second that the Supreme Court would not have made the ignominious decision they made today if not for President Duterte's insistence that a hated dictator be glorified as a hero,” the group noted.

The group lamented how the Duterte and the Supreme Court was “spitting on the memory of all those who suffered during, and as a consequence of, the Marcos dictatorship.”

They also expressed their concern that the decision will only “worsen the climate of impunity reigning in the country and will embolden ruling warlords and political dynasties to shun all democratic pretenses and rule with iron fists.”

The group called on all Filipinos to denounce this travesty of justice and expressed support for all protests and direct actions against the dictator’s burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
