MANILA, Philippines – Is it possible for a board taker to become a topnotcher in two different board exams held just a few days apart?
Absolutely, because that’s exactly what happened to Engr. Mark Vincent Layug. He placed Top 3 in the February 2022 Master Plumber Licensure Examination (MPLE), with a rating of 84.20 percent.
He also ranked Top 4 in the February 2022 Mechanical Engineer Licensure Examination (MELE), with a rating of 94.80 percent.

Mark graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Don Honorio Ventura State University.
In an interview with inhinyero.org on March 21, Mark shared that ever since he was a child, he had dreamed of becoming an engineer.
He said his college life was not particularly “dramatic,” but he admitted that he struggled during the review period, especially since the pandemic had just ended in 2022.
Mark said he could relate to other board exam takers who felt disheartened whenever exams were postponed, as they all shared the same struggles brought by the pandemic.
He mentioned that reviewing was even more challenging for him because the schedules of the two board exams he took were so close to each other.
He first took the Master Plumber Licensure Examination on February 15 to 16. He couldn’t believe that he not only passed but also became a topnotcher.
This became his inspiration to do even better in taking the other board exam—something that did not disappoint him.
At present, Layug works as an engineer and continues to make his parents proud.
Congratulations, Engr. Layug!
