MANILA, Philippines – After actor and Quezon City First District Representative Arjo Atayde became embroiled in controversy, his wife “Eat Bulaga” host Maine Mendoza once again spoke out to defend him against allegations that they were using public funds for their personal lifestyle.

In a lengthy statement shared on Facebook, the actress-TV host clarified that they do not own any property or business funded by taxpayers’ money.

“Not a single part of our life has been built on taxpayers’ money. Everything we have comes from years of work and savings. We pay our taxes, and we pay them truthfully, because we respect the same system we are accused of betraying,” Mendoza said.

The actress further explained that both she and their families are financially capable of supporting their lifestyle. She said it was insulting to suggest that their wealth came from illegal means or government funds.

She added, “It’s unfair to reduce everything that we are and everything that we have worked for to that single narrative. I will never accept the narrative that accuses us of stealing and living off taxpayers’ money. That is not who Arjo is, that is not who I am, and that is not who we are.”

Despite the painful criticisms and accusations they received in recent days, Mendoza stood firm that they would remain truthful and trust that the truth would come out in due time.

She also pointed out that if Atayde were truly guilty of wrongdoing, she would never cover it up. “Accuse him of other things if you wish, but not of stealing from people—that is one line he has never crossed, and never will,” the actress stressed.

Mendoza emphasized that the circulating photos and stories online might appear real to some, but one should not forget how easily narratives can be distorted.

They hope that when the truth finally comes out, those who were quick to judge and pour anger on them will admit their mistake. However, she acknowledged that such admissions rarely happen.

“Legal actions will be taken, and Arjo will clear his name by proving his innocence. Let’s allow due process to run its course before we condemn. God knows the truth, and we stand with clean hands,” she added.

In closing her statement, Mendoza stressed that not all politicians are corrupt and that some are merely convenient targets. “Not all politicians are corrupt—some are just convenient targets. The real villains are celebrating quietly in the shadows,” the TV host said.

Hi everyone. I realized my initial reaction when the issue first broke came across as informal and casual. Felt the need...
