Adrian Maverick Mendova ranked no. 6 in the April 2025 Pharmacist Licensure Examination. With this impressive feat, everyone might think this is the course he’s most passionate about. However, he revealed that pharmacy was actually just a random course he picked just weeks before enrollment. It’s cool that he still managed to be a topnotcher despite the random pick, right?

Mendova hails from Catbalogan City, Samar. He was among the students affected by the COVID pandemic, so he wasn’t able to attend face-to-face classes until much later. Still, he knew that he wanted to study in Cebu City, so he picked Southwestern University PHINMA.
Though he knew for sure about his choice of schools and where he’d study, choosing his course was a different thing. He was truly unsure of what to take.
The young man explained to Cebu Daily News, “I never really intended to study pharmacy, it was a last-minute decision, but I had to choose a program because it was only two weeks until the start of classes at most universities, and I still haven’t decided. So I just picked one program that SWU offers because at the time my older sister was also studying at SWU, and that program happened to be pharmacy.”
He’s the third of six children. Following his elder sister’s path proved to be a good choice because the last-minute decision led him to the Top 6 in the board exams.
Mendova also shared that his path to success in the pharmacy career wasn’t easy. When he moved to Cebu for the first time to complete his education, he struggled with communication because the language was different from what he was used to in Samar.
Even after graduation, he also struggled during the reviews. Thankfully, he had a strong support system.
He shared, “Yes, during my review, I felt like I was constantly on the verge of breakdown. But, the comforting words of my parents and girlfriend always kept me motivated.”
Still, he was confident that he’d pass – but never thought he’d make it to the top.
“No, I knew I was going to pass the board exam. But I didn’t think I did enough to place in the Top 10,” he shared.
Congratulations, Adrian Maverick Mendova!
