Fueling more speculations that she will be a substitute candidate in the 2022 national election, Duterte-Carpio has resigned from the party list she has helped form.

In a handwritten note signed by the presidential daughter herself, she addressed the members of HNP about her decision to leave.

The short note wrote, "To all the officers and members of Hugpong ng Pagbabago, it is with profound sadness that I hereby tender my resignation from our beloved party. My support will always be with you and I will always be grateful for all the things you have taught me."

HNP Secretary General Anthony G. Del Rosario accepted their chairperson's resignation and wished her all the best.

"While we are saddened by her resignation, we however wish her all the best in her future plans. Godspeed po Mayor Sara. In our hearts, you will always be our Chairperson. We love you po," he replied.

Earlier, Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez explained that Duterte-Carpio can run for a national post as a substitute candidate but under certain conditions. One of which is that she must run under a party that has an official candidate as a substitute. To do that, Duterte-Carpio must first resign from HNP since the regional party has no candidate for the 2022 election.

Albay Rep. Joey Salceda also revealed that Duterte-Carpio has long decided to run as president since May but there were "blocks" along the way.

"She wanted to be president in the first place since May. Yun naman talaga ang nakikita naman nya e,” he said.

“There is that unyielding firmness to purpose. Ang dami, everything thrown at her from the side of her father. Ayoko nang pag-usapan sana yan because tapos na yan, di na dapat pag-usapan,” he added.

Salceda continued, “There were just stumbling blocks towards it. So in order to clear it, di naman niya pwedeng diktahan ang tatay niya. So she had her way of clearing these roadblocks. She wanted to be president."

Former Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo also explained why it would not be best if Duterte-Carpio settles for a vice-president run in the 2022 polls. According to Panelo, Duterte-Carpio is a "warrior" ready to fight and continue the legacy of her father, President Rodrigo Duterte.

“The raison d’etre of the people’s clamor for Sara to get a crack at the presidency and her opening herself to such an idea is precisely to have a continuity of the legacies that her father is set to bequeath to the Filipino nation,” he noted.

Panelo added that if Duterte-Carpio wins as vice-president, she would be "an unproductive and dormant bureaucrat spare tire but just like the current one."
