MANILA, Philippines – Choosing to look at poverty as a challenge instead of as an obstacle, new doctor Rommel Abellar Amos shares the inspiring story of how he became a licensed physician and registered nurse even if his family is poor.
The 37-year-old former working student recently became a doctor after passing the March 2021 Physician Licensure Examination (PLE). As he rejoices in this new milestone in his life, he recalls the times when he worked hard as a working student and did odd jobs to support himself.
Back in 2005, he was a working student who worked as a water refiller to send himself to school. The following year, he became a merchandiser in a mall supermarket. Then, he worked as a marketing assistant in 2007.
In his determination to support his studies, he worked as sales clerk in 2008 then as assistant baker the following year.

Through all these, he managed to reach for his dreams and earn a degree. First, he graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy at the Nativity of Our Lady College Seminary. He later completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at St. Jude College Manila.
But this inspiring young man continued to work hard to reach for his dreams. He earned his degree as Doctor of Medicine from Cagayan State University - College of Medicine and Surgery. He now works at the Borongan City Health Office in Borongan, Eastern Samar.
He is also among the frontliners who risk their lives in this COVID-19 pandemic.
“Stepping out of the comfortable presence of my family, I will tread and risk the danger of getting the disease just to offer the medical services people need during this pandemic,” he wrote in a Facebook post.
Recently, he earned his license as doctor after passing the PLE. He happily shared the challenges he faced to inspire others.
“Let us just treat poverty as a challenge, not an obstacle. I think that my humble beginnings were very deliberate, and I'm grateful for them because I'm not sure I would see my achievements the same way if they were handed to me. So I EARNED them,” he wrote.
