MANILA, Philippines – An official from the Department of Education (DepEd) suggested that teachers who were affected with the changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic can work as tutors.
DepEd Undersecretary for Planning and Operations Jesus Mateo said on Friday that teachers who lost their jobs following the closure of several private schools may be hired as tutors. He said the education agency is now coordinating with local government units regarding the hiring of unemployed teachers as tutors.
"Sa kasalukuyan nakikipag-usap nga tayo sa mga lokal na pamahalaan na kung pupuwede ay i-hire sila (teachers) as tutors natin," Mateo said.
Mateo said one of the considerations DepEd made on their survey for the distance learning is to ensure that students will be accompanied or supervised by an adult during online classes. He said this is where the role of tutors will come in.
"Kung ang sagot po ay walang adult na makakaya na mag-supervise dito, that's where the tutors come in po," Mateo said.
Aside from hiring private school teachers as tutors, DepEd is also eyeing to hire para-teachers and volunteer teachers to help learners cope with distance learning.
Bagong Henerasyon (BH) Party-List Rep. Bernadette Herrera said the government must provide financial assistance to private school teachers who were affected by the pandemic. She said that while public school teachers enjoy the guarantee of having salaries, many private school teachers face school closures and loss of employment.
“Considering that there is much uncertainty on the enrollment of students which would consequently affect the ability of many private schools to sustain themselves, teachers and non-teaching personnel in private educational institutions should also be given assistance to help them cope with the effects of the pandemic,” Herrera said.
Earlier, Education secretary Leonor Briones assured that they are looking after the welfare of their educators, especially those from small private schools who have faced the financial burden of the health crisis. Briones said she consulted the idea of providing cash aid to private schooĺ teachers who lost their jobs due to their schools' closure.
