DOH reports 1,046 more COVID-19 cases; total jumps to 16,634

MANILA, Philippines – The total confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in the Philippines jumped to 16,634 Friday night, May 29, as the Department of Health (DOH) announced 1,046 more cases.

DOH said that only 46 are "fresh cases" or test results released to patient within the last three days.

The Health Department added that 1,000 are "late cases" or test results released to patient more than four days.

"The increase in the number of late confirmed cases is due to the more complete and timely submission of laboratories of their line list and the recent deployment of the COVID-KAYA information system," DOH explained.

DOH also announces 122 recoveries today. This brings the total number of recoveries to 3,720.

Meanwhile, 21 more people succumbed to the illness, bringing the death toll to 946.

The change on DOH reporting was announced by Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire in a virtual briefing on Friday.

Vergeire also said that 430 of the 539 new cases from Thursday's tally were reported late to the DOH Epidemiology Bureau.

As announced by President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday, Metro Manila, Davao City, Regions 2, 3,4-A, Pangasinan, Albay and Mandaue City will be placed under general community quarantine (GCQ) from June 1 to 15.

Meanwhile, the rest of the of the country will be put under modified GCQ (MGCQ).
