GUIDE: How to use DepEd Commons, access for free

Recently, Education Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones spearheaded the call for support from the telcos in providing free access to DepEd Commons (https://commons.deped.gov.ph/).

With the support of Globe Telecom and cooperation with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), learners and teachers can now access the online learning platform without incurring data charges on their Globe or TM-powered smartphones.

NOTE: Globe is reminding the public that while access to the site using the Globe/TM network will not entail any data charges, it does not cover the links outside the DepEd Commons domain. Thus, all links clicked and visited will still incur standard data charges.

DepEd Commons contains online review materials and Open Educational Resources (OER) authored by public school teachers who are subject matter experts. Teachers can retain, reuse, revise, remix, and redistribute the content by blending it with a learning management system to deliver a distance learning modality.

The platform also integrates the Globe eLibrary, an online platform which features age-appropriate and engaging e-books ranging from storybooks for children and young adults to textbooks on core subjects such as Math, Science, English, Filipino, Music, Arts, among others.

April 27 Update: DepEd also forged partnership with PLDT-Smart for free access on DepEd Commons through its whitelisting capabilities until May 31, 2020. This also includes Sun and TNT.

"This will ensure learners, teachers, and personnel with Smart subscriptions may continue to log on to DepEd Commons, even if this platform to be accessed through devices without load credits," DepEd Undersecretary Alain del Pascua said in a memorandum.

"This partnership further encourages educators and learners to take advantage of supplementary online instructional materials within the DepEd Commons domain free of charge until 31 May 2020," the memorandum added.

PLDT-Smart also inviting DepEd to avail the following services in support of education in the Philippines:

1. To host the back-end requirements of DepEd Commons platform at the ePLDT VITRO Data Center.

2. To augment current teaching facilities by leveraging on educational suites in collaboration with Microsoft and Google.

3. To co-develop mobile app for learners.

Based on the latest data, DepEd Commons has more than 4.2 million users accessing online learning materials at the height of the enhanced community quarantine. "The number of users is projected to continue to rise in the coming days," DepEd said.
