MANILA, Philippines – A poor man who received aid decided to use the money to buy a lot of food, more than he could consume on his own, because he plans to give it away to his neighbors!

Amid the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) imposed in many places across the Philippines, so many people are having a difficult time finding food. A lot of people have lost their jobs. Poor families are the worst hit, particularly those who work under the ‘no work, no pay’ scheme because they had no money to buy food.

There are some families and individuals who qualified for help from the government or were given money and/or relief goods by private companies and kindhearted donors. Some went viral for also sharing their meager blessings to others.

Somewhere in Bayawan City, Negros Oriental in central Philippines, a poor old man named Tatay Juanito went to the store of Cherry Marie Elusfa Baya and her family.

In a post on Facebook, Cherry Marie shared that the old man bought plenty of bread and softdrinks from their store. She was rather surprised at the amount of food the old man had bought. Curious, she asked whether he was buying food he would be stocking up for the rest of the week, a bit puzzled that he would choose bread and softdrinks for that purpose.

But Tatay Juanito smiled and told her he’s actually giving the food away to the neighbors he would pass by on his way home. Cherry Marie was surprised to learn that Tatay Juanito would still need to walk about 2 hours or so before he reaches home, but he does not mind the long walk. He’s used to it.

“You’re such a kindhearted man, Tatay,” she told him in Visayan.

“This money I am holding now, this is not the real treasure. This will just pass. Our goodwill to our fellowmen is the real treasure,” Tatay Juanito replied.

He added that though there are people who might be blinded by money, everyone else should still follow what is right because God is watching.

After paying for the goods he bought, this kind old man gave Cherry Marie an extra Php50. Then, he also looked for her sibling who had given him a mask the last time he was there; he wanted to also give her something in return, now that he has some money from the aid he received!

Cherry Marie said that she had learned a valuable lesson that day. It’s not a person’s financial status that matters because at the end of the day, money can’t buy real happiness.

God bless, Tatay Juanito!
