MANILA, Philippines – The Makati Medical Center (MMC) on Wednesday slammed Senator Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel on violation of their strict infection and containment protocols against the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
In a statement, MMC Medical Director Saturnino Javier confirmed that Pimentel, whose result for COVID-19 testing turned out to be positive, brought his wife to the hospital for delivery via cesarian section.
"By being in MMC, Senator Pimentel violated his Home Quarantine Protocol, entered the premises of the MMC-Delivery Room Complex, thus, unduly exposed healthcare workers for possible infection," said Javier.
Javier added that the action of the senator resulted to workload burden as number of their nurses and doctors may need to be quarantined.
"We denounce the irresponsible and reckless action of the senator. He added to the burden of a hospital trying to respond in its most competent and aggressive manner to cope with the daunting challenges of this COVID-19 outbreak," said the hospital chief.
He said Pimentel, "more than anyone else," should have "realized the ardent desire of every well-meaning Filipino and every dedicated healthcare institution to contain the spread of the infection."
The hospital said Pimentel's action "contributed no solution but created another problem" for Makati Medical Center, which embraced his wife for obstetric care.
Javier said the MMC Delivery Room Complex had already been decontaminated and disinfected, and could now be used.
"The involved healthcare workers have been duly identified, evaluated and will be quarantined, if the risk of exposure warrants it," Javier said.
Pimentel apologizes to MMC
Pimentel said he learned about the positive result while he was at the hospital with his wife Kathryn.
“I'm sorry that this happened. Farthest from my mind ‘yun. I am an expectant father, sinamahan ko 'yung wife ko who was supposed to give birth without finding na positive po ako," the senator said in his interview with CNN Philippines.
Pimentel added that he immediately left after learning of the COVID-19 test result.
"I told the OB even before I told my wife. Then I left her in the hospital. I never went inside the delivery room," he said.
