Feast of the Black Nazarene Traslacion 2020: livestream, updates

MANILA, Philippines – The annual Black Nazarene procession known as Traslacion happens today, January 9, 2020. Up to 2.5 million devotees are expected to flock for the parade of the life-sized, dark wooden statue of Jesus Christ, from from Quirino Grandstand to Quiapo Church.

The procession started a few minutes after 4 a.m. and may take just 15 to 16 hours. The procession in 2019 lasted for 21 hours.

The official Facebook page of the Quiapo Church (www.facebook.com/quiapochurch) and TV Maria (www.facebook.com/tvmariaphils) bring the livestream feed of the holy mass on January 8 to 9 and the 'Traslacion 2020' early Thursday.


Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle delivered the homily during the Feast of the Black Nazarene midnight mass. It was his final Nazareno fiesta mass as he is set to move to Rome as head of a powerful office in the Vatican.

Procession Route

The image of the Black Nazarene of Quiapo will be passing through a different route for this year's Traslacion following the recommendations of Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). Devotees will pass Ayala Bridge instead of Jones Bridge, as it had recently been retrofitted.

Cancellation of classes, work

Classes and government work in the nation's capital are suspended on Thursday, January 9.

In a Facebook post of Manila Public Information Office, Manila City Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso has ordered the suspension of classes in all levels in "all universities, colleges and schools".

The order, however, "does not cover city government offices involved in maintaining peace and order, public services, traffic enforcement, disaster risk reduction and management as well as sanitation."

Safety

Around 16,000 personnel, composed of officials from the Philippine National Police, National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), the Bureau of Fire Protection, Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the Philippine Coast Guard, the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, and volunteers will secure the annual procession.

Telecommunications firms Smart and Globe will temporarily shut down their network services in parts of Metro Manila starting Wednesday.

“We are also temporarily stopping the operation of some of our cell sites in parts of Pasay, San Juan, Mandaluyong, Makati, Malabon, Caloocan and Quezon City that are near the procession route,” Smart Communications Inc. said in an advisory.

In the memorandum dated Jan. 6, 2020 and signed by NTC Commissioner Gamaliel Cordoba, both networks were directed to cut off all network services starting at 11 p.m. on Wednesday (January 8) until 12 p.m. on January 10.

“There shall be no signal, direct and/or reflected, in the area specified in the order/directive, coming from any cell sites (base stations),” the memorandum read.
