Civil Engineer board topnotcher credits success to prayers, hardwork

MANILA, Philippines – The November 2019 Civil Engineer Licensure Examination (CELE) topnotcher says his success was due to prayers and hardwork.

For Lou Mervin Tristan Pua Mahilum of the University of San Carlos, acing the civil engineering board was truly Godsent. He said he couldn't have done it without prayers, determination and support from his family.

Mahilum was ranked no. 1 in the recent civil engineering board exam with a rating of 93.25 percent.

The topnotcher said he took his review seriously and worked really hard for his goal. During the exam, Mahilum shared that the test was really tough, especially the Math portion but with hardwork, he still managed to hurdle it.

Speaking in Cebuano, Mahilum said that one technique he used during the exam was to skip the hard questions first and only get back at them after going through the rest of the exam.

"Dako kaayog gikatabang ang prayers, prayers gyud [prayer is a big help]," he said, adding that he is thankful to his friends and most especially his family for their support.

But despite taking the board exam prepared and ready, placing at the top spot still came as an unexpected surprise for Mahilum.

He said that although his goal was to top the board exam, but after taking it, it was so difficult that he felt he didn't have a chance.

"Nagkadugay, gikaon ko sa akoang negativity, mao to wa nako nag-expect nga masulod ko sa top ten," Mahilum said. [I was beaten by my negativity, that’s why I did not expect to land in the top ten.]

The son of a seafarer, Mahilum is thankful for his father's sacrifices, especially because he isn't around to share his success with him.

Mahilum said hearing his father say, “I am proud of you,” was the greatest moment of his life.
