"Medical technology was not my first choice,” Bernales said.

The topnotcher admitted he initially wanted to take up a chemical engineering course at the University of the Philippines (UP) but he unfortunately failed the admission test (UPCAT).

Bernales' mother also had other dreams for him and wanted him to be a nurse. Being a native of Panay, Capiz, the family wanted Bernales to study near them and not venture far away.

Their dilemma was solved when Bernales' sister convinced him to take up a degree in medical technology at the University of San Agustin (USA) in Iloilo City. Hopes were high as USA was Western Visayas' first university.

Throughout his college journey, Bernales admitted he had learned to love medical technology.

“I’ve learned to love medical technology. I’ve learned how to enjoy every moment instead of being a worrier. That’s what catapulted me to where I am today,” Bernales said.

The topnotcher said he is learning much looking forward to giving back to his alma mater by going back and teaching.

“Embodying the principles of St. Augustine, I have surpassed all of the struggles just like an eagle soaring above the storm,” Bernales said.

Meanwhile, Bernales shared on his Facebook account how he offered his success to the Lord.

Bernales said, "Thank You, Heavenly Father for the gift of wisdom, for all the graces and blessings you have showered upon us. I maybe in doubt in what I have done but I did not doubt what you can do for me. You are such an amazing God!"

"There are times that I am close to giving up but you never give up on me. This board exam and the result is all for the greater glory of you, our Father," he added.
