Friendster is back as social gaming hub in the Philippines

Pioneering social networking site Friendster has been formally re-launched as a social gaming hub, making its final bet in a practically do-or-die situation.

The branding “Friendster living the game,” will be its new slogan as it will now venture into the gaming arena.

The social website, which has Filipino Nikolai Galicia as its chief operating officer, picked the Philippines as the site of its re-launch since the country still hosts the majority of its users.

 Galicia, along with top executives of MOL Global — the Malaysian Internet firm which bought Friendster in 2009 – gave a preview of the gaming site’s gaming features at a press launch in Greenbelt in Makati City on Wednesday.

“The Philippines has always been one of our biggest markets with a vibrant online community, making the country exceptionally important to us,” said Friendster CEO, Nikolai Galicia. “Therefore it is a joy to roll out Friendster’s inaugural event here, to a community that is continuously growing. We are committed in continually bringing the latest content and giving the most compelling rewards to our users.”

The public outing of the site is set last April 27 at the SM North Cyberzone in Quezon City in an event dubbed “Friendster FunXtion.

The first social networking site in the country introduced last 2002 got acquired by Asia’s leading e-payment and lifestyle provider MOL Global Pte Ltd or simply MOL (Money Online) in 2009.

Friendster reported that they still have 100M users worldwide and that 40% of which are from the Philippines, however only 10% are active and mostly are gaming users.
