BANGA, South Cotabato — Three students were killed and eight others were seriously injured in a shooting incident at a school in Banga, South Cotabato, on Friday, September 18, according to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
One of the three fatalities was identified as the alleged gunman, according to Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla.
“3 dead as of now. We are completing the investigation now,” Remulla said, adding that authorities should reexamine laws on gun ownership and loose firearms after the investigation.
The shooting occurred inside Banga National High School in Barangay Benitez at around 1:15 p.m., based on initial reports from local officials.
South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo Tamayo Jr. earlier said the alleged gunman was a Grade 9 student who reportedly fired at his classmates before turning the firearm on himself.
Authorities initially reported varying casualty figures as responders attended to the victims and verified information from the scene.
The DSWD said social workers were deployed to provide psychological first aid and psychosocial support to students, victims and their families.
The Banga Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office also announced the suspension of classes at all levels in the municipality following the incident.
The Department of Education expressed deep concern over the shooting and said it was coordinating with the Schools Division Office, Regional Office, local authorities and law enforcement to verify the circumstances and provide necessary assistance.
“Our immediate priority is the safety and well-being of our learners, teachers, and school personnel,” DepEd said.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the shooting and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
