MANILA, Philippines – A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck near Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro, on Friday morning, shaking several parts of Mindoro and nearby provinces, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
PHIVOLCS said the tremor occurred at 10:38 a.m. and was traced to a depth of 14 kilometers, with its epicenter located about 13 kilometers southwest of Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro.
The earthquake was strongly felt at Intensity V in Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro, as well as in the Oriental Mindoro areas of Calapan City, Naujan, Puerto Galera, San Teodoro, and Victoria.
Intensity IV was reported in Taal, Batangas, and the Occidental Mindoro municipalities of Abra de Ilog and Sablayan, while Intensity III was experienced in Quezon City, Batangas City, General Trias City in Cavite, and San Pedro City in Laguna.
Residents in Parañaque City, Santa Cruz in Laguna, and Guinayangan in Quezon felt the quake at Intensity II, while weaker shaking was recorded in several other parts of Metro Manila, Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, Bataan, Quezon, Romblon, and both Mindoro provinces.
Instrumental measurements likewise registered Intensity V in Mamburao and Puerto Galera, Intensity IV in Abra de Ilog, Looc, and Sablayan, and Intensity III in Quezon City, Batangas City, Calapan City, and Victoria, confirming the widespread ground shaking.
In its latest Earthquake Information No. 2 issued at 11:18 a.m., PHIVOLCS said no significant damage is expected from the earthquake but warned that aftershocks are expected as the ground continues to adjust following the seismic event.
Authorities have advised residents to remain alert for possible aftershocks and inspect homes and buildings for any signs of damage, especially in areas that experienced stronger shaking, while monitoring official updates from PHIVOLCS and local disaster management offices.
