The month-long celebration runs from August 1 to 31, 2026, pursuant to Proclamation No. 1041, which declares August as National Language Month. The annual observance honors President Manuel L. Quezon, known as the Father of the National Language, whose birth anniversary falls on August 19.

Meanwhile, Republic Act No. 7104, which created the KWF, mandates the commission to formulate policies, plans, and programs for the development, enrichment, promotion, and preservation of Filipino and other Philippine languages.

Objectives of Buwan ng Wika

The annual celebration aims to:

  • Fully implement Proclamation No. 1041.
  • Raise public awareness of the Filipino language and its history.
  • Encourage government agencies, schools, and the private sector to participate in language-related programs.
  • Promote the importance of the national language through active public participation.
  • Strengthen public awareness of the KWF as the government agency responsible for preserving and developing Filipino and other Philippine languages.

Highlights of the 2026 Buwan ng Wika Celebration

According to the KWF, this year's celebration is anchored on the theme, "Wikang Filipino at AI: Kasangkapan sa Pananaliksik at Tulay sa Yaman ng Impormasyon" (Filipino Language and AI: Tools for Research and Bridges to Rich Information).

The theme highlights the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in research, learning, and knowledge production while emphasizing the Filipino language as a bridge to accessible, reliable, and meaningful information in the Philippine context.

Calendar of Activities

KWF has lined up several nationwide activities throughout August, including:

  • August 1 – Formal opening of the celebration at the Presidential Car Museum in Quezon City, coinciding with the 82nd death anniversary of Manuel L. Quezon and the observance of National History Month in partnership with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP).
  • August 3 – Nationwide symbolic flag-raising at the Independence Flagpole in Rizal Park, Manila, with schools, government offices, and communities encouraged to hold simultaneous ceremonies.
  • August 19 – Commemoration of the 148th birth anniversary of Manuel L. Quezon through a wreath-laying ceremony and a short program at the Quezon Memorial Shrine.
  • August 27Bunyi: Gabi ng Parangal, recognizing winners of KWF competitions and honoring outstanding advocates, educators, and public servants who have promoted the Filipino language.
  • July 28, August 5, 7, 12, and 18 – Free online Wikain Mo! and Harayahan webinars featuring scholars and experts in language, philosophy, and technology. The sessions are streamed live on the KWF Facebook page.
  • Throughout August – KWF's 33 Sentro ng Wika at Kultura nationwide will conduct Tertulyang Pangwika, a series of seminars and community discussions promoting the Filipino language and culture.
