'Bagyong Maymay' threatens Ilocos; Signal No. 2 up in 8 areas

MANILA, Philippines – Tropical Storm Maymay (international name: Kujira) maintained its strength on Wednesday afternoon, August 5, as it moved north-northeastward over the sea west of Ilocos Sur.

In its 5:00 p.m. bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the storm's center was estimated at 145 kilometers west of Sinait, Ilocos Sur, as of 4:00 p.m.

Maymay has maximum sustained winds of 75 km/h, gusts of up to 90 km/h, and is moving north-northeastward at 10 km/h.

Strong to gale-force winds extend up to 180 kilometers from the center.

PAGASA said Maymay is expected to move generally eastward and may make landfall over the Ilocos Norte–Ilocos Sur–La Union area tonight or early Thursday, August 6.

The weather bureau expects the storm to remain a tropical storm before landfall.

Maymay is forecast to weaken into a tropical depression by Thursday morning after crossing land and may further weaken into a low pressure area by Thursday afternoon or evening while traversing Northern and Central Luzon.

PAGASA warned that heavy rainfall and severe winds may still affect areas outside the forecast landfall point and confidence cone.
