MANILA, Philippines – The senior high school curriculum is set for one of its biggest transformations since the launch of the K to 12 program.
Starting School Year (SY) 2026–2027, the Department of Education (DepEd) will fully implement its Strengthened Senior High School (SHS) Curriculum, phasing out the traditional “strands” and introducing a more flexible, elective-based system.
On February 27, DepEd issued Memorandum No. 012, s. 2026, formalizing this major shift in the country’s basic education program.
Under the new system, the previous four-track structure—Academic, Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL), Sports, and Arts and Design—will be streamlined into just two tracks: Academic and Technical-Professional (TechPro).
Goodbye Strands, Hello Electives
In the current system, students are locked into strands like STEM, ABM, HUMSS, or GAS. The new curriculum replaces these with flexible elective clusters, allowing learners to craft their own subject path based on interests and future goals, rather than pre-assigned strands.
The revised curriculum also reduces core subjects to five, aiming to decongest learning content, sharpen foundational competencies, and better prepare graduates for higher education and the workforce.
Expanded Opportunities for Learners
Students can now explore a wider range of subjects aligned with their interests, career goals, and competencies, while maintaining the four SHS exit pathways: higher education, employment, entrepreneurship, and middle-level skills development.
Academic Elective Clusters:
- Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities
- Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)
- Sports, Health, and Wellness
- Business and Entrepreneurship
- Field Experience
TechPro Elective Clusters:
- Aesthetic, Wellness, and Human Care
- Agri-Fishery Business and Food Innovation
- Artisanry and Creative Enterprise
- Automotive and Small Engine Technologies
- Construction and Building Technologies
- Creative Arts and Design Technologies
- Hospitality and Tourism
- Industrial Technologies
- ICT Support and Computer Programming Technologies
- Maritime Transport
What DepEd Says
“The Strengthened SHS Curriculum introduces structural, instructional, and content reforms to foster foundational skills, enhance learner choice, and improve workforce readiness,” said DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara.
“These changes ensure learners acquire relevant competencies aligned with higher education, middle-skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship,” he added.
Following a successful pilot program in over 800 schools, DepEd directed all public and private SHSs to adopt the new curriculum for incoming Grade 11 students in SY 2026–2027. Grade 12 learners will continue under the existing curriculum for a smooth transition.
Key Information for Students
- Core Subjects: Effective Communication / Mabisang Komunikasyon; Life and Career Skills; General Mathematics; General Science; Pag-aaral ng Kasaysayan at Lipunang Pilipino.
- Mixing Electives: Students may choose subjects from multiple clusters to suit their interests and future plans.
- School Offerings: Not all schools will offer both tracks; offerings depend on resources.
- Strands: Traditional strands like STEM and ABM are no longer available; elective clusters replace them.
With these reforms, DepEd hopes to give learners greater control over their education while better equipping them for life after senior high school.
