Aftermath of Cebu Earthquake

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered the full mobilization of government agencies in response to the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck northern Cebu on Tuesday night, September 30. The powerful tremor claimed at least 69 lives and left more than 140 people injured.

Officials warned that the death toll in Bogo City could rise as rescue efforts continued. Intermittent rain, as well as damaged roads and bridges, hampered the delivery of aid and the search for survivors.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported more than 300 aftershocks within six hours of the main quake, which was centered near Bogo City. A total of 147 injuries were recorded in the towns of Bogo, Tabuelan, Catmon, Daanbantayan, and San Francisco.

Over 1,000 residents were forced to evacuate, many of them setting up temporary shelters or gathering in open spaces for fear of aftershocks and the collapse of weakened structures.

The Department of Education (DepEd) reported heavy damage to school facilities in Cebu and nearby areas. Based on its latest assessment, 197 classrooms sustained minor damage, 26 suffered major damage, while 34 were completely destroyed. Six Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilities were also affected.
