Magnitude 7.5 earthquake jolts Davao Oriental; Tsunami Warning raised

MANILA, Philippines — (Updated 10:40 a.m.) A powerful magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck offshore Davao Oriental at 9:43 a.m. on Friday, October 10, 2025, according to the DOST-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The tremor, with its center about 62 kilometers southeast of Manay, Davao Oriental, was of tectonic origin, indicating movement of the Earth’s crust beneath the sea.

Phivolcs warned that damage and aftershocks are expected following the strong quake.

The agency initially recorded the quake at magnitude 7.6.

Shortly after the earthquake, Phivolcs issued a tsunami warning for several eastern coastal provinces, cautioning residents of destructive tsunami waves exceeding one meter above normal tide levels. The agency said the first tsunami waves may arrive between 9:43 a.m. and 11:43 a.m. and could continue for several hours.

Communities in the following provinces were strongly advised to evacuate immediately to higher grounds or move farther inland:

  • Dinagat Islands
  • Davao Oriental
  • Southern Leyte
  • Leyte
  • Surigao del Norte
  • Surigao del Sur

Phivolcs also advised boat owners in affected areas to secure their vessels and move away from harbors, estuaries, and shallow coastal waters. Those already at sea are urged to remain in deep waters until further notice.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as emergency response teams in Mindanao and the Visayas prepare for possible aftershocks and tsunami impacts. Residents are urged to remain calm but vigilant and to follow official advisories from Phivolcs and local disaster councils.
