MANILA, Philippines – U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the warring nations Israel and Iran have reached an agreement to implement a ceasefire amid escalating tensions between them.
Trump said that Israel and Iran have agreed to a “complete and total ceasefire” aimed at ending what he referred to as the “12-day war.” According to him, the truce will be implemented gradually over a 24-hour period.
“On the assumption that everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called, ‘THE 12 DAY WAR’,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social site.
The announcement of a complete and total ceasefire followed Iran’s missile strikes on U.S. military bases in Doha, Qatar. No casualties were reported, as Iran had reportedly notified the Qatari government in advance of its planned attacks. Qatar’s advanced airspace defense system successfully intercepted the missiles, preventing any damage or loss of life.
Qatar asserted that it is not ruling out the possibility of retaliating against Iran in accordance with international law, following the latter’s missile strike targeting the Al Udeid U.S. military base in Doha.
Meanwhile, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep concern over Iran’s attack on the Al Udeid. The strike is believed to be a retaliation for the US earlier assault on Iranian nuclear facilities.
"From the outset of the crisis, the Secretary-General has repeatedly condemned any military escalation in this conflict... He further reiterates his call on all parties to stop fighting," Guterres’ spokesperson said.
