OPM icon Freddie Aguilar passes away at 72

MANILA, Philippines – Freddie Aguilar, the legendary figure in Original Pilipino Music (OPM), passed away early Monday morning, May 27, at the age of 72.

The news was confirmed by Atty. George Briones of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas, where Aguilar served as National Executive Vice President.

According to Briones, Aguilar died at approximately 1:30 a.m. at the Philippine Heart Center in Quezon City.

As of this writing, the cause of death has not yet been disclosed.

In accordance with his Muslim faith, burial arrangements are reportedly being made within 24 hours of his passing.

Aguilar, affectionately known as "Ka Freddie," rose to fame with his iconic song “Anak”, which resonated not only in the Philippines but across the globe.

His other enduring works, including “Bayan Ko” and “Magdalena”, have become cultural anthems, touching generations of Filipinos and shaping the nation's musical heritage.

Beyond his musical achievements, Aguilar also contributed to public service. He was appointed Presidential Adviser on Culture and the Arts during the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte and served as a member of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

His passing marks the end of a remarkable era in Philippine music, but his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
