2 dead in NAIA Terminal 1 departure area car accident

MANILA, Philippines – A tragic accident at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 on Sunday morning, May 4, claimed the lives of two individuals after a black SUV rammed into the terminal's departure area.

According to an incident report from NAIA Police Station 1, the victims were identified as a 28-year-old man and a five-year-old girl. Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon confirmed the fatalities, stating, “There are two fatalities, including the five-year-old daughter of an overseas Filipino worker (OFW),” as reported by Super Radyo dzBB.

Initial investigations by the New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC) revealed that the SUV crashed through the outer railing and onto the walkway near the terminal’s entrance.

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC), which responded to the scene with five ambulances and a team of volunteers, reported two confirmed fatalities. The PRC statement noted, "At around 8:55 AM, a sports utility vehicle (SUV) crashed through the outer railing and walkway, ultimately slamming into the entrance of the Departure Area at NAIA Terminal 1. The incident tragically resulted in the deaths of a male adult and a 4-year-old girl."

In addition to the fatalities, several people sustained injuries and were taken to San Juan De Dios Hospital in Pasay City. The injured have been identified as Cynthia Masunson, Edith Soriano, and Jovita Escarlos.

According to the NNIC, initial reports showed that the SUV was parked near the entrance of NAIA Terminal 1 then it "suddenly accelerated, crashing through the outer railing and into the walkway."

Authorities have secured the area, and access is now restricted to authorized personnel from NNIC, PNP, and Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) Security. A full investigation into the incident is underway.

NNIC stated, “At this time, we are awaiting official confirmation on the cause of the incident and reports of injuries. We are closely coordinating with all concerned agencies to gather accurate information.”
