MANILA, Philippines – Several local government units (LGUs) have suspended face-to-face classes on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, due to the anticipated high heat index exceeding 40°C.

The Department of Education (DepEd) earlier said that some schools are implementing alternative delivery mode, including online and modular methods amid the suspension of classes.

“All on alternative delivery mode. Only Face to face is suspended,” DepEd Asec. Francis Bringas told reporters.

Based on the PAGASA’s latest recorded heat index, a total of three areas recorded indexes classified as “danger category” on Tuesday. This includes Catarman in Northern Samar, Guiuan in Eastern Samar and Cotabato in Maguindanao.

Here's the list of class suspensions for Wednesday, April 3, 2024:

METRO MANILA

  • Pasay City – face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private)

CENTRAL LUZON

  • Calumpit, Bulacan – face-to-face classes, preschool to senior high school (public)
  • Malolos City, Bulacan – face-to-face classes, preschool to senior high school (public)
  • Angeles City, Pampanga – face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private)
  • Bacolor, Pampanga – face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private)
  • Mabalacat, Pampanga – face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private)
  • San Fernando, Pampanga – face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private)

ILOCOS REGION

  • Manaoag, Pangasinan – face-to-face classes, preschool to senior high school (public and private); until April 4
  • Mapandan, Pangasinan – face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private)
  • San Jacinto, Pangasinan – face-to-face classes, preschool to senior high school (public and private)
  • Santa Barbara, Pangasinan – face-to-face classes for preschool to senior high school (public and private); until April 5

VISAYAS

  • Bacolod City – face-to-face classes, preschool to senior high school until April 4; private schools with air-conditioned rooms and tertiary-level institutions may exercise their discretion to continue with face-to-face classes
  • Minglanilla, Cebu – face-to-face classes, preschool to senior high school (public and private)
  • Iloilo City – face-to-face classes, all levels; private schools and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), including graduate schools may proceed with the resumption of their face-to-face classes, subject to the full discretion of their school heads/administrators
  • Isabela, Negros Occidental – face-to-face classes, all levels
  • Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu – face-to-face classes, preschool to senior high school (public); until April 12/li>
  • Liloan, Cebu – face-to-face classes (public); until April 12/li>
  • Talisay City, Cebu – face-to-face classes (public); until April 14. Classes in private schools will be at the discretion of their respective school administration.

MINDANAO

  • General Santos City – face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private); until April 5
  • Sarangani – face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private); until April 19
  • Banga, South Cotabato – afternoon face-to-face classes, primary to secondary (public and private); until April 15
  • Santo Niño, South Cotabato – afternoon face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private); until April 8
  • Surallah, South Cotabato – afternoon face-to-face classes, all levels (public and private)
  • Tantangan, South Cotabato – afternoon face-to-face classes, all levels; until April 15

Based on the Department of Education Order No. 37 series of 2022, private schools have full discretion to decide on their class suspensions provided that they have proper facilities to accommodate onsite classes during extreme heat conditions.

LGUs advised the public to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and take necessary precautions to avoid heat emergencies.

Meanwhile, several LGUs in Tarlac have suspended classes following the announcement of the Tarlac Electric Cooperative Inc. 1 of a power interruption on April 3, 2024 from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. for maintenance work.

  • Bamban, Tarlac – all levels (public and private)
  • Camiling, Tarlac – all levels (public and private)
  • Capas, Tarlac – all levels (public and private); shift to modular distance learning
  • Concepcion, Tarlac – all levels (public and private)
  • Gerona, Tarlac – all levels (public and private)
  • La Paz, Tarlac – all levels (public and private)
  • Mayantoc, Tarlac – all levels (public and private)
  • Paniqui, Tarlac – all levels (public and private)
  • San Clemente, Tarlac – all levels (public and private)
  • San Jose, Tarlac – all levels (public and private)
  • San Manuel, Tarlac – all levels (public and private)
  • Santa Ignacia, Tarlac – all levels (public and private)
