Veteran actress Jaclyn Jose passes away at 60

MANILA, Philippines – (3rd Update) Multi-awarded and veteran actress Jaclyn Jose died on Saturday, March 2, 2024, her talent agency announced early Monday morning. She was 60.

“It saddens us to inform everyone of the untimely passing of Miss Jaclyn Jose (real name Mary Jane Guck,” PPL Entertainment Incorporated announced in a social media post.

“The Guck and Eigenmann families are requesting for everyone to please pray for the eternal repose of Miss Jaclyn Jose and for them to be allowed the respect and privacy to mourn her passing, and navigate these difficult times,” it added.


In a statement on Monday, March 4, Andi Eigenmann confirmed the sad news and the cause of death of her mother.

“It is with great sadness that I announce the untimely passing of my nanay, Mary Jane Guck, better known as Jaclyn Jose, at the age of 60 (sic) on the morning of March 2nd, 2024 due to a myocardial infarction or a heart attack," she said.

Born on October 21, 1963 in Angeles City in Pampanga, Jose made her acting debut in 1984. She immediately earned her first FAMAS Awards nomination in Chito S. Roño's film. The following year, she starred in Lino Brocka's White Slavery which earned her first Gawad Urian nomination.

Jose's first appearance in television was in the soap opera Familia Zaragoza, playing Ester from 1996 to 1997. She rose to popularity in television for playing Magda in Mula Sa Puso (1997–1998).

She has since appeared in numerous soap operas including Nagsimula sa Puso (2009), Reputasyon (2011–2012), Kahit Puso'y Masugatan (2012–2013), as well as on television series including action drama Zorro (2009), period drama Ilustrado (2014), sports drama Bolera (2022), and action drama Batang Quiapo (2023).

In previous interview on why she returned with ABS-CBN via the hit action series FPJ’s Batang Quiapo, she said, “Ang pakiramdam ng artista, ako ha, kapag hindi ako nakapasok sa soap ni Coco, hindi kumpleto ang pagiging artista ko. May ganoong feeling. Hindi ko alam ang pakiramdam ng kapwa ko artista, pero ako, ganoon ang pakiramdam ko."

In 2016, she made history as the first Filipino and Southeast Asian to win Best Actress at Cannes Film Festival in her title role in Brillante Mendoza film "Ma' Rosa".

Jose was in a relationship with actor Mark Gil. She is survived by their child together, Andi Eigenmann, and a son from another partner, Gwen Garimond.
