LIVESTREAM: Gilas Pilipinas vs South Sudan FIBA World Cup 2023

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine national basketball team Gilas Pilipinas will continue its quest in the FIBA World Cup 2023 against African team South Sudan in the classification phase tonight, August 31 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Gilas Pilipinas is aiming to claim a ticket to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Only one slot is reserved for best Asian squad.

To boost the country's chances of making it to the Olympics, Gilas will need to get past the third and fourth placers in Group B in pivotal matchups.

World no. 40 Gilas was placed at the classification round after exiting the first round of Group A with 0-3 record. World no. 62 South Sudan on the other hand ranked third in Group B with a 1-2 card.

The hot-shooting Bright Stars of South Sudan have made 15 three-pointers against China to get their first-ever World Cup win. One of the main shooters for South Sudan is 29-year-old shooting guard Dut Jok Kacuol.

“Physical, athletic team. Watched them a few games. Their coaching is good as well,” Gilas star player Jordan Clarkson said of South Sudan, which has former NBA veteran Royal Ivey as its head coach.

Gilas' next assignment will be against Group B fourth placer China on Saturday, September 2. China also went winless in Group B.

Japan already have edge on Asian countries after finishing the first round with 1-2 card, beating Finland, 98-88.

Gilas Pilipinas vs South Sudan match is set at 8 pm.
