De Lima 'safe' after hostage-taking attempt – PNP

MANILA, Philippines – Former senator Leila de Lima is now safe after three prisoners tried to escape and attempted to hostage her at the custodial facility, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Sunday, October 9.

The inmates also stabbed a police officer who is now in critical situation, PNP Chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr. said in DZBB interview.

Azurin said the incident happened at 6:30 am at Custodial Center in Camp Crame when the police officer was delivering food to prisoners.

"Kanina mga 6:30AM habang nagpapakain ang ating kapulisan sa mga nakakulong sa Custodial Center sa Camp Crame, may tatlong preso na nagtangkang tumakas at pinagsasaksak yung pulis po natin na nagbibigay ng pagkain," Azurin said.

The police officers were able to contain the incident and the stabbed officer was rushed to to the hospital.

The suspects namely Arnel Cabintoy, Idang Susukan and Feliciano Sulayao, who are members of Abu Sayyaf Group according to PNP, were shot and killed by the policemen.

Azurin assured that the former senator is safe and now being checked at a hospital.

“Hindi masyadong nasaktan si Senator de Lima. Pina-pacheck up natin siya kung ano kalagayan niya. Definitely, she is safe," he said.

The investigation is now ongoing and security inside Camp Crame was tightened due to the incident.
