A-G Passers: February 2022 Bar Exam Result for 2020-2021

MANILA, Philippines – The Supreme Court (SC) released results of February 2022 bar exam for 2020-2021 batches on Tuesday, April 12 or in two months after the grueling exam. The full list of passers with A-G surname is available on this page as announced online.

A total of 11,402 examinees took the bar exam on February 4 and 6.

As announced on Tuesday, 8,241 out of 11,402 (72.28%) passed the first digital bar exams.

Examination was conducted in 31 testing sites scattered in 22 local government units across the country.

Associate Justice Marvic Leonen, 2020/2021 Bar chairperson, asked the high court to hold a special En Banc session on Tuesday for the purpose of considering his report on the first-ever digitalized and regionalized Bar Examinations and the release of its results.

SC also confirmed that oath-taking of successful examinees will be on May 2, 2022.

NOTE: Leonen confirmed on April 11 that names of those who have hurdled the exam will be flashed on a widescreen at the Supreme Court. Results can be viewed simultaneously on SC's official website.

COVERAGE OF EXAM

The Supreme Court reduced the coverage and shortened the duration of the 2020/21 bar exam.

Instead of the usual eight subjects, bar hopefuls took four sets of examinations for two days.

1. The Law Pertaining to the State and Its Relationship with Its Citizens (formerly Political Law, Labor Law, and Taxation Law) - 30%;

2. Criminal Law - 15%;

3. The Law Pertaining to Private Personal and Commercial Relations (formerly Civil Law and Commercial Law) - 30%; and

4. Procedure and Professional Ethics (formerly Remedial Law, Legal Ethics, and Practical Exercises) - 25%.

Examinees were tasked to answer 15 to 18 straightforward questions per bar subject designed to address entry-level legal competency. All questions were essay-type and there were no multiple-choice questions.

PREVIOUS BAR EXAM

In the 2019 bar exam, 27.36% hopefuls (2,103 out of 7,685) passed the series of exams. Mae Diane Azores of the University of Santo Tomas in Legaspi aced the bar with a rating of 91.0490%.

In the 2018 bar exams, only 22.07% (1,800 out of 8,158) passed the exams. Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) graduate Sean James Borja topped the bar with 89.31%.

In the 2017 bar exam, passing rate was 25.55%. Graduates of provincial law schools dominated the list of topnotchers. Mark John Simondo, graduate of University of St. La Salle (USLS) in Bacolod, Negros Occidental aced the bar with a grade of 91.05 percent.

In the 2016 exam, a record-breaking 59.06% passing rate was hit. This was a historic high for at least 30 years. All topnotchers came from the provincial law schools, dominating the usual top performing NCR-based schools. University of San Carlos' Karen Mae Calam aced the bar with a rating of 89.05%.

PHILIPPINE BAR EXAM OVERVIEW

The Philippine bar examinations, dubbed as the most prestigious professional licensure exam in the country for aspiring lawyers, is the only professional exam not handled by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). It is exclusively supervised by the Supreme Court.

The SC conducts the Bar examinations pursuant to Article VIII, Section 5 of the Constitution which provides that it shall have the power to promulgate rules governing the admission to the practice of law.
