2020-2021 Bar Exam Results: P-Z Passers February 2022

MANILA, Philippines – The Supreme Court (SC) released results and full list of passers of the 2020-2021 bar exam, conducted in February 2022, on Tuesday, April 12 or in two (2) months after the grueling exam. View on this page for P-Z list of passers.

As announced, 8,241 out of 11,402 (72.28%) passed the first digital bar exams.

The confirmation of the exact release date was announced on April 5 by the Supreme Court. The press briefer revealed that Associate Justice Marvic Leonen, 2020/2021 Bar chairperson, requested to hold a special En Banc session on Tuesday for the purpose of considering his report on the first-ever digitalized and regionalized Bar Examinations and the release of its results.

The examinations for aspiring lawyers were conducted on February 4 and 6 in 31 testing sites scattered in 22 local government units across the country. This was after several postponements in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19 pandemic.

With the reduced duration of 2020-2021 bar exam, bar hopefuls took four sets of exam instead of the usual eight (8) subjects:

1. The Law Pertaining to the State and Its Relationship with Its Citizens (formerly Political Law, Labor Law, and Taxation Law) - 30%;

2. Criminal Law - 15%;

3. The Law Pertaining to Private Personal and Commercial Relations (formerly Civil Law and Commercial Law) - 30%; and

4. Procedure and Professional Ethics (formerly Remedial Law, Legal Ethics, and Practical Exercises) - 25%

In the 2019 bar exam, 27.36% hopefuls (2,103 out of 7,685) passed the series of exams. Mae Diane Azores of the University of Santo Tomas in Legaspi aced the bar with a rating of 91.0490%.

In the 2018 bar exams, only 22.07% (1,800 out of 8,158) passed the exams. Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) graduate Sean James Borja topped the bar with 89.31%.

In the 2017 bar exam, passing rate was 25.55%. Graduates of provincial law schools dominated the list of topnotchers. Mark John Simondo, graduate of University of St. La Salle (USLS) in Bacolod, Negros Occidental topped the bar with 91.05 percent.

The Philippine bar examinations, dubbed as the most prestigious professional licensure exam in the country for aspiring lawyers, is the only professional exam not handled by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). It is exclusively supervised by the Supreme Court.

The SC conducts the Bar examinations pursuant to Article VIII, Section 5 of the Constitution which provides that it shall have the power to promulgate rules governing the admission to the practice of law.

The tough examination has the usual passing rate of 20% to 30%.
