It can be recalled that a video of Nuezca shooting the Gregorios during an altercation went viral. It enraged the public and Nuezca's case became controversial. Many used Nuezca's case to call out the presence of police brutality and impunity in the country.

The Trial Court sentenced Nuezca to reclusion perpetua or up to 40 years imprisonment and ordered to pay P952,560.

"A 'shoot first, think later' disposition occupies no decent place in a civilized society. Never has homicide or murder been a function of law enforcement," Judge Stela Maria Gandia-Asuncion said in her 18-page decision.

Before the fatal shooting of Frank and Sonya Gregorio, Nuezca faced homicide charges, six counts of grave misconduct, demotion over robbery and extortion charges, among other issues.

Earlier, the bereaved family of the Gregorios sought over P70 million as restitution for damages. Atty. Freddie Villamor, the legal counsel of the Gregorio family, said they are looking at the civil liability of Nuezca as he appeared on Raffy Tulfo show.
