Hidilyn Diaz wins Philippines' first-ever Olympics gold

MANILA, Philippines – Hidilyn Diaz finally won the Philippines' first ever Olympics gold medal.

Diaz brought Pinoy pride as she bagged the gold medal for the Women's Weightlifting 55kg, the first for the Philippines. She tallied an Olympic record of 224kg and defeated eight other competitors including China's world record holder Liao Qiuyun.

High hopes were given to Diaz as she easily started strong in the competition. In her first two attempts, she lifted an impressive 94kg and 97kg. In her final snatch, she failed to lift the 99kg. However, it was in the clean and jerk that Diaz took on the spotlight. In her first attempt, she lifted 119kg and 124in her second attempt, setting an Olympic record.

This is Diaz's fourth straight Olympics competition and her podium finish made history for the country that has long been hoping for an Olympic gold. She had bagged a silver medal back in Olympics 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In 2018, she was recognized as the Filipino weightlifter to win gold at the Asian Games.

Diaz is also regarded as the first Filipina to win a medal in the Olympic Games.
