LPA east of South Luzon develops into tropical depression

MANILA, Philippines –
The Low Pressure Area (LPA) east of Southern Luzon has developed into a tropical depression, state weather bureau PAGASA announced in its 5:00 pm bulletin on Tuesday, October 27, 2020.

The Low Pressure Area outside the PAR developed into a Tropical Depression at 8:00 AM today.

This weather disturbance is likely to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) tomorrow evening or Thursday and will be called 'Rolly'. It is forecast to intensify into tropical storm category in the next 72 hours.

At 4:00 pm today, the center of Tropical Depression outside the was estimated based on all available data at 2,125 km East of Central Luzon.

The new tropical depression has maximum sustained winds of 45 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 55 km/h.

It is moving North Northwest at 15 km/h.

Forecast Positions
  • Tomorrow afternoon (October 28, 2020): 1,875 km East of Central Luzon (OUTSIDE PAR)
  • Thursday afternoon (October 29, 2020): 1,440 km East of Central Luzon
  • Friday afternoon (October 30 2020): 1,030 km East of Southern Luzon
  • Saturday afternoon (October 31, 2020): 315 km East of Virac, Catanduanes
  • Sunday afternoon (November 1, 2020): 135 km West of Legazpi City, Albay

Typhoon Quinta intensifies further as it moves westward over the West Philippine Sea.

The Tropical Depression will move northwestward or west-northwestward today through Thursday, then southwestward by Friday towards Bicol Region-Eastern Visayas area.

Hazards affecting land and coastal waters

This disturbance is not affecting the weather over any portion of the country at this time.

'Rolly' will be the country's 18th tropical cyclone for 2020.

On average, there are 20 tropical cyclones that could form or enter the PAR each year. Only have of those are projected to make landfall.

PAGASA declared the onset of rainy season on June 12.
