MANILA, Philippines – Malacañang Palace announced on Saturday, August 15, the list of areas to be placed under the general community quarantine (GCQ) and modified GCQ from August 16 to 31, 2020.
In a press briefing, Presidenttial Spokesperson Harry Roque said 10 areas will be under the GCQ: Nueva Ecija, Batangas, Quezon, Iloilo City, Cebu City, Mandaue City, Lapu-Lapu City, Talisay City, towns of Minglanilla and Consolacion.
The rest of the country will be placed under MGCQ, with some provinces, highly urbanize cities and independent component cities with strict enforcement of local action.
The National Task Force (NTF) and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) are directed to ensure that areas flagged for local action shall implement strict lockdown of areas in line with the Zoning Containment Strategy, strict enforcement of minimum public health standards, and intensified tracing and quarantine of close contacts and isolation of confirmed cases.
Meanwhile, the community quarantine classifications of Metro Manila, and the provinces of Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal will be announced by President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday, August 17.
On August 2, Duterte approved the recommendation of the Department of Health (DOH) to revert Metro Manila and nearby provinces on stricter modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) for two weeks, August 4 - 18.
DOH Secretary Francisco Duque III in coordination with the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) heard the request of the medical workforce citing an overwhelmed healthcare system and “burned out” frontliners.
Roque on Tuesday said MECQ extension is 'unlikely' given the lack of funds to provide assistance to severely affected Filipinos and the huge blow to the economy.
As of August 14, the nationwide COVID-19 total reached 153,660 with 6,216 new confirmed cases. Most of the cases were logged in NCR and Laguna province, 3,848 and 302, respectively.
