Business mogul Danding Cojuangco passes away at 85

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino businessman and politician Eduardo "Danding" Cojuangco passed away on Tuesday evening. He was 85.

The chairman and CEO of San Miguel Corporation died due to lingering illness, reports said.

Cojuangco had kidney transplant in 2013 but also suffered other illnesses. dzRH radio reported he died of lung cancer.

He was a basketball patron to his alma mater De La Salle University in the UAAP and PBA, which SMC has three teams: San Miguel Beer, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, and the Magnolia Hotshots.


Cojuangco was a close adviser and personal friend to former Philippine president Ferdinand E. Marcos, which led his severance from his cousin, Corazon Aquino, who, after Marcos' ouster, succeeded him as president.

He was also a former governor of Tarlac in the late 1960s and ambassador to the United States.

After obtaining ownership of San Miguel Corporation in the 1970s, Cojuangco turned it into the biggest food and beverage conglomerate in the country and in Southeast Asia.
