Education Secretary Leonor Briones appeared at “Laging Handa” virtual press briefing and said she has confirmed with the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) on Emerging Infectious Diseases on the recent update on the opening of classes for School Year 2020-2021.

Briones said the decision was based on consultations and the majority's preference was really August.

"Naireport ko na sa IATF last week at nasabi ko na ang naipili naming date. Dahil sa pagconsultation namin, ang preference nila ay August.... Ang napili naming class opening date ay August 24," Briones said.

The start of the school year is usually held in June, but Republic Act No. 7977 allows it to take place "not later than the last day of August."

The Education secretary added that classes may be conducted physically or virtually depending on the state of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic by then.

For areas that will still be under enhanced community quarantine in August, Briones said online classes will be held. She said these new teaching alternatives and curriculum are updated to keep up with the country's ‘new normal’.

The Education chief added the end of classes for the school year is tentatively scheduled on April 30, 2021. Palarong Pambansa, Schools Press Conference and other national school events are all cancelled for the rest of the school year.

Meanwhile, Briones said teachers and other school personnel are expected to report to work on June 1, either physically or virtually, as this also marks the start of the class enrollment.
