Magnitude 5.4 earthquake hits Occidental Mindoro; tremor felt in Metro Manila

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported a magnitude 5.4 earthquake that shook parts of Luzon and Metro Manila early Sunday, May 10, 2020.

The exact time of occurrence was recorded at 3:18:12 AM with epicenter northeast of Lubang, Occidental Mindoro.

The earthquake that occurred has a tectonic origin with 76 km depth of focus.

The strong quake was felt at Intensity IV in Makati City, City of Manila and Parañaque City.

Intensity III in Malabon City, Mandaluyong City, Pasay City, Pateros, Quezon City, Taguig City, Tagaytay City, Calapan City, and Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro and Calatagan and Lipa City in Batangas.

Instrumental Intensities:
  • Intensity IV - Calatagan, Batangas; Malolos City, and San Ildefonso, Bulacan; Navotas City
  • Intensity III - Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro; Talisay, Batangas; Bacoor City, and Tagaytay City, Cavite; Muntinlupa City; Guagua, Pampanga
  • Intensity II - Magalang, Pampanga; San Juan City
  • Intensity I - San Jose, Occidental Mindoro; Palayan City, and San Jose City, Nueva Ecija; Gumaca, Quezon; Baler, Aurora

Phivolcs warned that aftershocks are expected.

Meanwhile, another tremor struck east of Claveria, Masbate at 3:56 AM today. It has tectonic origin and measured at magnitude 4.2. There's no reported intensity nor expected aftershocks from the quake.
