“Tuloy po iyan dahil hindi naman po tayo pupuwede na walang preparasyon,” presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said in an interview with DZMM.

Based on Department of Education (DepEd) Calendar for School Year 2020-2021, the month-long registration period shall use online or other innovative ways to adhere to social distancing protocols amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

DepEd said this also includes those who enrolled during the early registration period in February 2020.

The next school year will open on August 24, 2020 and will end on April 30, 2021.

On Monday, President Rodrigo Duterte said he would rather postpone the opening of classes than risk the safety of learners.

“Mga bata, ‘wag muna. ‘Yang opening ng classes, that’s a, I will not allow the opening of classes na magdikit dikit ‘yang mga bata. Bahala na hindi na makatapos,” Duterte said.

Meanwhile, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said that it is still "safe" to resume classes in August even without a vaccine.

"Pag-aaralan po nating maigi ito. Sa ngayon, tingin namin, ligtas naman po kung bubuksan natin ang klase by August 24. Kinakailangan po dito, siguraduhin lamang na lahat ng ating minimum standards for health ay nakatalaga," he said.

Duque added that DepEd has "many measures in place" to ensure that students will be safe.
