Duterte, IATF may decide on ECQ, MECQ fate on May 27

MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte and the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-MEID) are expected to decide on Wednesday, May 27, for community quarantine starting June 1 in Metro Manila and several high-risk areas.

“Hihintayin na po natin ang magiging desisyon ng ating IATF dahil inaasahan naman po natin na bukas ay baka mayroon nang desisyon. Ang importante po, titingnan natin ang doubling rate, ang critical care capacity at siyempre atensiyon din sa ating ekonomiya,” presidential spokesperson Harry Roque Jr. said at a televised briefing on Tuesday.

Enhanced community quarantine (ECQ), the most stringent quarantine, has been imposed in Cebu and Mandaue cities until May 31.

Metro Manila, Laguna, Bataan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Zambales, and Angeles City have been placed under modified ECQ.

Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) general manager Jojo Garica on Tuesday said NCR mayors have voted unanimously to shift to general community quarantine (GCQ).

"First, I want to announce unanimously po [na] ang ating NCR mayors are acceptable to the GCQ," Garcia said.

Meanwhile, the rest of the areas in the country are currently under GCQ.

As of May 26, there are 14,669 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Philippines. The Department of Health reported 350 new cases, total recoveries rose to 3,412 while the the death toll climbed to 886.
