MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte has declared May 25, 2020 (Monday) a regular holiday in observance of the Eid‘l Fitr, the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

“In order to bring the religious and cultural significance of the Eid’l Fitr to the fore of national consciousness, it is necessary to declare Monday, 25 May 2020, a regular holiday throughout the country,” a copy of the declaration signed by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea stated.

Eid’l Fitr marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan for Muslims.

According to Proclamation No. 845 for the nationwide holidays for year 2020, the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) shall inform the Office of the President [ President Rodrigo Duterte] of the actual date of Eid’l Fitr and Eid’l Adha on which these holidays shall fall.

In November 2002, former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo signed Republic Act No. 9177 into law declaring the first day of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar, a national holiday for the observance of Eidul Fitr.

RA 9177 states that "the approximate date of these Islamic holidays may be determined in accordance with the Islamic calendar (Hijra) or the lunar calendar, or upon Islamic astronomical calculations, whichever is possible or convenient."
