School creates special graduation video as rites were canceled amid COVID-19

MANILA, Philippines – The graduation rites might have been canceled amid the COVID-19 pandemic but one school found a way to still host a special online event to give the students a chance to ‘graduate’, even if it’s only on Facebook.

Based on the DepEd calendar for SY 2019-2020, the graduation rites were set until April 3, 2020. That would have pushed through without COVID. However, due to the deadly pandemic, the Department of Education (DepEd) ordered schools to reschedule or forego holding the moving up ceremony and graduation rites for everyone’s safety.

Just like other educators, the teachers of San Isidro Elementary School in San Luis, Pampanga felt sad that their students were not able to get the graduation they deserved. But they found a way to still honor the students’ hard work by creating a special graduation video.

Posted by teacher Ma Luisa Manalili on her Facebook page, the special graduation video was created with individual photos and class pictures from the school’s official photographer. Just like a real graduation, the students’ photos were flashed on the screen, but they can’t march to the stage to receive their diplomas. Still, many were touched by the teachers’ efforts to create the video.

The Grade 6 advisers also gave some words of inspiration as they bid farewell to their students. And while COVID-19 has put an abrupt stop to the school year, making everyone part without saying goodbye, it is good that these teachers made an effort to make the students feel special.
